Synthesis and characterization of polycaprolactone for anterior cruciate ligament regeneration

Synthesis of polycaprolactone (PCL) via ring opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone and ammonium heptamolybdate is reported. Nanofiber scaffolds were produced from synthesized and commercial PCL. Scaffolds were biomechanically compared to native anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tissue harvested from sheep. The synthesized PCL is similar to its commercial counterpart in terms of chemistry, surface morphology and mechanical properties. The synthesized PCL showed weaker mechanical properties visa vis native ACL tissue in terms of ultimate stress, and elastic modulus.
