Photochemical reactions between mercury (Hg) and dissolved organic matter decrease Hg bioavailability and methylation

文摘
Photochemical transformation of mercury (Hg) is studied at varying Hg/DOM ratios in water. Photolysis of Hg-DOM complexes in water leads to decreased Hg bioavailability and methylation. A new pathway of abiotic photochemical formation of HgS in water is proposed. Results provide a mechanism why newly deposited Hg is more readily methylated than preexisting Hg.
