A 3D thermal FEM of laser cladding is established for thermal analysis.

Solidifying and cooling rate of moving solid–liquid interface have been achieved.

The effect of scanning speed on the variation of cooling rate was analyzed.

The G/R of the moving solid–liquid interface has been deduced.

Simulated results show a high degree of agreement to the experimental phenomena.
