A new Cu2+-selective colorimetric sensor based on 3-hydroxynaphthalimide was devised. Sensor showed pronounced Cu2+ selectivity over other common metal ions and anions. Practical application to aqueous sample was conducted by liquid-liquid extraction. Convenient signaling of Cu2+ in simulated wastewater by smartphone was possible.
