Four techniques for DMSO intercalation into kaolinite were compared. HCl activation of kaolinite reduces the efficiency of DMSO intercalation. Ageing in presence of water was recommended. An adsorption process was confirmed to occur in addition to the DMSO intercalation into kaolinite. Water is sandwiched between O(DMSO) and O(silica) layer of kaolinite via adsorption.
