L. bulgaricus had high growth rate and final biomass in uncontrolled pH cultures. High intracellular pH resulted in high growth rate and final biomass. High H+-ATPase activity and ATP concentration conduced to high intracellular pH. Low ratio of NADH/NAD+ and high NH3 concentration led to high intracellular pH. Proper consumption and necessary profiles of amino acid improved intracellular pH.
