Crack-free mesoporous material for optical device is reported by sol-gel method. Mullite and Er3+ doped mullite grain size within range of 167–202 nm and 40–110 nm respectively is reported. Refractive index of 1.46 for mullite and 2.7 for Er3+ doped mullite matrix with high transparency is obtained. Thermally stable, photoluminescent Er3+ doped mullite is beneficial for optical applications at room temperature.
