Effects of liquid column perturbations on primary breakup and spray structure of liquid jets in transverse free air jets are revealed.

Liquid column perturbations reduce the location of column breakup point significantly and have important effects on spray structure.

It is found that large ligaments appear very close to the interaction point of liquid jet and gas flow.

The empirical correlations are developed to estimate the spray trajectory and location of column breakup point in suspension plasma spray.
