The synthesis of the novel 2鈥?3鈥?cyclopropane nucleoside 3鈥?deoxy-3鈥?C-hydroxymethyl-2鈥?3鈥?methylene-uridine is described. Stereoselective construction of the cyclopropane ring was achieved via Simmons鈥揝mith cyclopropanation of a benzyl protected silyl enol ether, which was itself derived from 1,2-O-isopropylidene-伪-class="smallcaps">d-xylofuranose.
