The concentrations of phenanthrene, anthracene, fluoranthene, pyrene, benzo[a]anthracene, chrysene, andhexachlorobenzene (HCB) were measured in spruce needlesat 36 sites in eastern Alaska during early spring.Concentrations of each polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon(PAH) varied by an order of magnitude. Samples taken fromnear the city of Fairbanks had higher concentrationsthan samples taken from more rural areas. Anthropogenicactivities near Fairbanks are most likely a source ofPAHs. Variation in the concentration ratios of isomericPAHs indicates the relative importance of combustion andpetrogenic sources. The relative combustion contributionis largest in coastal samples and smallest near Fairbanks. Incontrast, the concentration of HCB varied by only afactor of 2. Lipid content of needles and distance fromthe coast were the major factors correlated with theconcentration of HCB.
