We have synthesized a series of stable and metastable rare earthelement-iron antimonides, controlling bothcomposition and structure using multilayer reactants. The stablerare earth iron element antimonides have thefilled skutterudite structure (LaFe4P12) with astoichiometry of 1 for the rare earth element. The metastablerareearth element-iron antimonides could be prepared with the entiresequence of rare earth elements. The latticeparameters of these metastable compounds were always larger than thoseof the corresponding more stable analog, and the occupancy of the rare earth element cation was found to be lessthan 1. Reitveld analysis ofLu1-xFe4Sb12suggests that the late rare earth element compounds have a newdistorted filled skutterudite structure. Structuraltrends are discussed in terms of their potential use as thermoelectricmaterials.
