The aqueous reaction of cobalt(II) sulfate with trimesic acid (H
3TMA = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylicacid) in the
presence of a base yields com
plexes with the general formula of Co

2. The identity of the basedetermines the s
pecific structural characteristics of the com
plexes formed. When sodium hydroxide is used, a novelcobalt(II) coordination
polymer, {[NaCo
3(TMA)
2(
3-OH)](
2-H
2O)
4(H
2O)
7·1.5H
2O}
n (
1), is
produced. Com
pound
1contains NaCo
3(OH) clusters connected via TMA ligands into 1D chains, and
1 crystallizes in the orthorhombics

Z = 8. When triethylamine is used,the
previously re
ported 1D zigzag chain coordination
