The limitations facing land filling and recycling and theplanned ban on sea disposal of sludge leads to the expectationthat the role of sludge incineration will increase in thefuture. The expected increase in sludge incineration willalso increase scrutiny of the main drawback to sewage sludgeincineration-the formation of hazardous air pollutants(HAPs). Despite the extensive body of knowledge availableon sewage sludge combustion, very few studies havebeen conducted on the formation of HAPs during sludgecombustion. In this work, the interactions between sewagesludge pyrolysis products and sludge ash were investigatedusing a dual chamber flow reactor system and a horizontallaboratory scale reactor. The results of this study shows thatsludge ash can catalyze oxidation and chlorination oforganics. In the absence of HCl in the gas stream, sludgeash acts as an oxidizing catalyst, but in the presence ofHCl, sludge ash acts as a chlorination catalyst producinghigh yields of organochloride compounds.
