Dry grinding is usually adopted in grind-hardening technology in order to obtain a deep harden layer. However, dry grinding would not only cause a deteriorated surface on the ground opponent but also accelerate the wear of the grinding wheel. This paper examines the application of minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) in the grind-hardening with a detailed discussion of the cooling and lubricating mechanism of MQL. Grind-hardening experiments of annealed AISI5140 steel were carried out under different cooling conditions including the wet grinding, dry grinding, and water-based coolant MQL. The experimental results show that MQL can reduce the grinding forces and the grinding temperature and improve the ground surface quality. The harden layer depth of MQL grinding is almost the same as that of dry grinding. In addition, the layer has a finer martensite structure with a high micro-hardness resulting from the high cooling rate in MQL. Because the minimum quantity coolant is utilized, there is a good surface quality on the grind-hardening surface.
