Inflammatory diseases of the uterus and uterine appendages are mainly caused by ascension of pathogens through the vagina, less commonly by intra-abdominal processes and are also known as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Clinical symptoms of cervicitis are often nearly absent, while symptoms of endomyometritis are bleeding disorders sometimes accompanied by systemic infections. In the case of inflammation of the uterine appendages lower abdominal pain is the main clinical sign. Postpartum endometritis and septic ovarian vein thrombophlebitis can be life-threatening if diagnosed too late. Administration of suitable antibiotic combination regimes for a sufficiently long time is crucial in the treatment of inflammatory diseases of the uterus and uterine appendages. In some cases, additional surgical treatment is needed. Typical complications of PID are tubal infertility, ectopic pregnancy and chronic lower abdominal pain.
