Background Fractured teeth can be a special challenge for conservative therapy or are scheduled immediately for extraction. Often these teeth have experienced a number of treatments, e.g. fillings, root canal or post preparations which have all contributed to a weakening of the remaining tooth structure. Sometimes the reason for tooth fracture is not so obvious and can also affect vital teeth that were initially considered to be intact. These often show cracks in the enamel which can, however, with progressive expansion lead to bigger problems. Methods The clinical aspects of the reasons for cracked or fractured teeth can be divided in natural, acquired and iatrogenic factors. In order to find an adequate and timely treatment in terms of crowns or adhesive restoration, a thorough diagnosis and knowledge of the origin, nature and spread of tooth cracks are essential. This article explains the current results and therapeutic approaches.
