Influence of Exposure Environment on the Corrosion Resistance of 2–9% Cr Steels

Corrosion tests on 2–9% Cr steels were conducted using steam and supercritical water under 0.1–25 MPa at 600 °C. The oxidation kinetics were similar in three different environments, and they showed near-parabolic behaviour. It appeared that the level of benefit arising from increased chromium content was not constant but was dependent on the exposure environment. Whilst it was evident that the increasing pressure increased the oxidation kinetics, it was also true that the presence of high levels of Cr in the alloy still imparted some enhanced protection.
