The 10,700 km region of northwesternOregon, USA, is dominated by mountainous forestedlandscapes fringed by agricultural lands and rapidlyexpanding urban areas. The Douglas-fir/western-hemlocktrees, admixed with other species, inthe mild, moist regional climate with rich soilsare among the most highly productive of temperateforests. Timber harvest has been the dominant landuse for much of this century. Many current foreststands are planted, and have the potentials to bemanaged and shaped for a variety of traditional andevolving forestry objectives. The ages, resilienceand productivity of these forests and mosaics of landownerships permit a variety of future scenarios offorested landscapes, constrained largely by capacitiesof social organizations to plan and execute managementfor desired future conditions.p>
