The distal region of the short arm ofchromosome 3S from Aegilopslongissima, which carries the powderymildew resistance gene Pm13, wasintrogressed into common wheat. Due tosuppression of recombination between thisregion and corresponding wheat homoeologoussegments, a possible strategy to constructa genetic map around the Pm13 genewas based on crosses between a wheataddition line carrying the Ae.longissima 3S chromosome and thecorresponding 3S addition lines of Ae.searsii and Ae. variabilis. Theefficiency of this strategy was evaluatedby scoring recombination frequencies inprogenies derived from these crosses.Recombination between 3S chromosomes from Ae. searsii and Ae. longissimawas very low, whereas 26.5% recombinantalien chromosomes were obtained from thecross involving the Ae. variabilisand Ae. longissima 3S additionlines. These data were used to construct a3S chromosome map that resulted largelycolinear to the consensus map of thehomoeologous group 3 of wheat.
