The orofacial complex is one sensorimotor unit. In many cases it requires multidisciplinary diagnostics and treatment as well as thinking along myofascial chains for an individual transformation of the muscle functions affected. The function of the tongue plays an essential role in the whole context. The goal is to understand the orofacial system as an entire system in a holistic perspective, with special emphasis on the tongue as an essential functional component. As a consequence this has a decisive impact on the choice of appropriate measures. Ingrained habits need to be progressively eliminated. Adapted interdisciplinary treatment packages are an indispensable prerequisite. This article describes the topic from the perspective of the three disciplines represented in the core team, maxillofacial surgery, physiotherapy and functionally oriented logopedics.
