A formal diagnosis of metastasis is based on a bone biopsy accompanied by an anatomopathological study. Confirmation that there is a single lesion may be required if a localised “curative-treatment is proposed. Advances in imaging is continuing to push the boundaries of investigations, however the use of expensive techniques is only justified if the results change how the patient will be cared for. This, of course, depends on the aetiology of the primary tumour. Localised radiotherapy treatments, interventional radiology and surgical procedures for a solitary bone metastasis (SBM) should be discussed at a multidisciplinary team meeting, taking into account the general context, the functional risk and the systemic treatment proposed by the oncologist and also the patient’s opinions. Treatment with a bone resorption inhibitor should also be discussed.
