Sexual dysfunctions are a common problem in people with mental illness. They can be triggered or aggravated by psychiatric medication, but also by additional somatic medication, and they have a negative effect on treatment satisfaction and compliance. It is important to talk about sexual functions as early as the first consultation in order to reliably record the development of dysfunctions and, if necessary, to treat them. This includes taking a comprehensive history, developing a biopsychosocial model together with the client, and adapting medication. In terms of medication, a wide range of options are available for the treatment of sexual dysfunction, such as switching medication to drugs with less sexual side effects, dose adjustments, or combinations with appropriate medications that improve sexual function.
