Synthesis and Characterization of Hollow Mesoporous Silica Spheres Using Negative-Charged Polystyrene Particles as Templates

This paper reports the synthesis of hollow mesoporous silica (HMS) spheres using negative-charged polystyrene particles (ca. 200 nm in diameter) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide as dual templates. The obtained HMS spheres were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, and nitrogen adsorption–desorption analysis. The shell thickness of HMS spheres could be adjusted in a range of 30–75 nm by changing the concentration of precursor. The HMS spheres (ca. 60–65 nm in shell thickness) presented a high surface area of 1496 m2/g, and the total pore volume and average pore diameter were found to be 0.97 cm3/g and 2.9 nm, respectively.
