文摘
Based on the soil characteristics and economic parameters, the agricultural land in Slovakia was grouped into different categories with respect to their suitability for sugarbeet cultivation, using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Four categories of soils were identified: highly suitable soils, moderately suitable soils, less suitable soils and soils unsuitable for sugarbeet cultivation. These were characterized in detail with respect to geographic, climatic, productivity and economic parameters and maps for these different categories were generated. About 20 % of the agricultural land was characterized to be highly suited for sugarbeet cultivation, while 18 % of the land was moderately suitable and 3 % of the area fell in the less suitable category. The rest 59 % of the agricultural land was designated as unsuitable for growing sugarbeet. The study showed that Slovakia has a good share of soils suited for growing sugarbeet and approximately 90 % of the sugarbeet growing areas represent the highly suitable and moderately suitable soils. The present study would help the sugarbeet growers in minimizing the risks associated with sugarbeet cultivation in the country.
