The process of electrochemical reduction of titanium dioxide to titanium metal has been studied in detail through extensive experimentation in grams scale to 5–8 kg scale. The objective of this study has been to describe the high temperature conversion process in terms of possible chemical reactions involving species generally observed in the experimentation. Based on the measurements and experimental observations it was possible to describe the reduction process in a thermodynamic point of view through a set of chemical reactions involving various sub-oxides of titanium.KeywordsElectrochemical reductionMolten saltsChemical synthesisTitanium dioxideTitanium suboxides
