The superconducting coils are certainly equipped on the next generation fusion reactors, and there will be a transition section between the superconduting cables and the water-cooled cables, the latter one is still necessary in the power supply; the high temperature superconducting current lead (HTS-CL) is the best solution, which can work with one end at 4?K and the other 300?K. The largest part of a HTS-CL is the heat exchanger (HEX), which connects the high temperature superconductor to the water-cooled cables, the temperature difference between the two ends of the HEX could be 235?K, the heat transfer coefficient must be high enough to make the design compact; meanwhile, the pressure drop in the HEX must be low to satisfy the cryogenic system’s cycling requirement. This paper introduces the hydraulic analysis and experiment of the 68?kA HTS-CL HEX mockup.
