The paper presents new data on Messinian, Pliocene and Quaternary-sediments cored on the top and the flanks of Victor Hensen Seahill (VHS) and updates the state of knowledge on its nature. The sediments of six cores and two dredge samples display varying incomplete sequences with normal faults, layers with sediment clasts and stratigraphic gaps. The data support the interpretation of the elongated VHS as a tectonic structure modelled by dominantly tensional faulting since at least early Pliocene time. The present vertical difference of about 525 m in the position of Messinian sediments (occurrence in core BAN 81-13 from VHS and, deeply buried, in DSDP Site 374) gives the order of magnitude of such faulting.
