摘要

In the structural design process for eastern United States structures, seismologists and engineers frequently need to estimate the maximum horizontal ground-motion from a given mbLg vertical-component magnitude and an epicentral distance. In addition, the seismologist occasionally needs to estimate an earthquake’s mbLg magnitude from horizontal amplitude data. This note reports on a sample of horizontal and vertical ground-motion observations and suggest how the two sets of data are related.
