This dissertation project examines the institutional and cultural history of classical archaeology as it evolved in Rome over the course of the nineteenth century. Framed principally as a landscape history,it tracks the in situ crystallization of modern archaeology within Rome and the subsequent impact of this science and pursuit of ancient heritage on the form the city and the symbolic meaning of the newly excavated, isolated, and displayed 'monumental zone' within the young capital. In documenting the early nineteenth-century development of archaeology, the project prioritizes the role of foreign archaeologists and institutions in this process, arguing that the development of Roman archaeology in Italy is best envisioned as a hybrid international endeavor involving overlapping and collaborative efforts between local Roman archaeologists, communities of expatriate scholars, and large numbers of foreign tourists moving through Rome. In examining the evolving symbolic role of Rome's monuments and the role of archaeology in shaping the gazes and activities that consumed and produced this iconographic landscape, the project principally examines the intersections between Roman archaeology and national identity in late nineteenth-century Rome. This is primarily done by exploring the connections between archaeology, landscape and the evolution of a cult or romanita (roman-ness),an identity politics wherein modern Italians envisioned themselves as direct inheritors of a glorious Roman past. At the intersection of these two elements---the international hybridity of early archaeology and the role or archaeology in Italian national identity---the project argues that these histories narrate an important example of the foreign production of national heritage. The project contains four principal case studies: architecture pensionnaires of the French Academy in Rome, the German Institute of Archaeological Correspondence,Rome's formal monumental zone, and the 1911 International Exposition of Rome.
