The objective of this qualitative study was to assess the process of culture sharing in the work environment, assess the nature of the sharing as experiences by the work group, and determine if this process expanded cultural awareness. The study revealed that coworkers were affected by returning employees and the sharing of their experiences while located in the foreign workplace. Additionally,it was revealed that the industry did not specifically cause any impact on the improvement of cultural understanding. Each industry within the study had improved awareness attributed to the foreign assignment. However, the study could not confirm whether the foreign assignment caused conflict or miscommunication amongst the coworkers. Based on the aforementioned findings, the study contributed to research on the effects of foreign assignment in the home office of the returning expatriate. There are definite challenges of the experience, both in living away from home and in returning after a long absence. These challenges were addressed briefly within the discussions with the coworkers but there could be more in-depth study of the process of the returning employee. Further, this study did not focus on the difficulties of foreign assignment. The study concludes with a discussion of the improved cultural awareness as well as of cultural differences and any disagreements caused by the cultural differences within the home office or abroad.
