This text examines contemporary art and artists in Taiwan after 1987. First, the amalgamation of ethnic groups and relations in Taiwan is discussed, and then, the history of art in Taiwan in the 20th century is briefly stated. In particular, the work of representative artists, Jing-Rong Chen (1934-), Tien-Chang Wu (1956-), Horng-Jiun Shieh (1961-), and Wu Din-wuu Walis (1960-) is analyzed respectively. In addition, this work makes comparisons between the colonial and post-colonial periods and the impact of colonial influence on contemporary art in Taiwan. Moreover, through the analysis of these four quintessential artists' work, it is confirmed that their creative artistic expressions reflects perfectly the societal and political changes in Taiwan. Ultimately, it is demonstrated that the work of these four contemporary artists represent more than simply the reproduction of Western themes and styles, but rather reflects a novel hybrid of Taiwanese culture and external influence resulting in a hybrid art form for modern times.
