The ever- evolving role that technology plays in day to day life has made it necessary for governments to enact plans to mitigate cyber threats. The growing threat of cyberwar has become a major issue for both the cybersecurity community and policy makers. There is no definitive answer to whether cyberwar will occur; however, many governments are taking preventive measures. The United States is no exception and has implemented a variety of plans to deal with cyberwar. In response to past cyber attacks, the United States has created new organizations within the government to handle cyber incidents. The purpose of this research was to examine the potential effects of a cyberwar in order to secure potential targets against attacks. The many flaws related to the current strategies implemented by the U.S. government to handle cyber incidents were explored. Additionally, there is a lack of top- tier cybersecurity experts in the U.S.,which is needed to foster an environment of technical proficiency. The lack of talent in the area of cybersecurity is an immediate concern given the amount of successful Advance Persistent Threats APTs) infiltrating U.S. critical computer systems. APTs represent one of the most serious and long-term cyber threats; however, along with APTs,a myriad of cyber threats have the capability to exploit fundamental weaknesses in cyber infrastructure. Therefore, the threat of cyberwar can be attributed to an increase in cyber attacks and a lack of capable cybersecurity experts.
