By the autumn of 1950,Baton Rouge,Louisiana,boasted three high schools serving the needs of black students in local communities: McKinley High School,Southern University Laboratory School,and Capitol Junior-Senior High School. Capitol High School,which originally opened as Capitol Junior-Senior High School,was established as a result of a petitioning effort by a group of citizens in the Eden Park community. The school,which became Capitol High School in 1959,enjoyed years of academic achievements and athletic success,etching a great foundation in the local community,a symbol of great pride and a rich history for many. The primary purpose of this study is to investigate the history of Capitol High School during the definitive years of its existence. The purpose of this thesis is to highlight the establishment,achievements,and transformation of Capitol High School. Research for this project was conducted through oral interviews,newspaper articles and magazine clippings,and a variety of primary and secondary sources.
