Routing in Mobile Ad Hoc networks (MANETs) are very challenging because of the dynamic network topology with moving nodes. Most current approaches are shortest-path based, in terms of route selection. However, shortest-path is no longer the most desirable property of a route at the moment of route selection, because of dynamic topology in mobile Ad Hoc networks. We introduce Fuzzy Rule-Based enhancement, and apply it on Ad Hoc On-Demand Distance-Vector routing protocol (AODV), which is a well-known routing protocol in MANETs. Our approach improves network performance by selecting routes that are anticipated to survive longer. The long-life of a route is of great importance in MANETs, as the merits of a shorter-hop but short-lived rout will be reduced because of frequent data flow interruptions and the frequent need for route rediscoveries and route reconstructions. A Fuzzy Rule-Based route selector employed on a node takes inputs (hop count, signal strength, and variation of signal strength) as available information about route candidates that may impact their survival duration, and generates evaluation results (Selectibility Factor) by using fuzzy inference based on Fuzzy If-Then rules representing human knowledge on route evaluation. A route evaluated with a higher value of Selectibility Factor is chosen over the other. Finally, simulation results and performance analysis for Fuzzy Rule-Based enhancement on AODV versus standard AODV, are presented to show the effectiveness of our enhancement.
