•New upscaling algorithm for nonlinear steady state problems is proposed.•This method can be used to approximate productivity index (PI) on the coarse scale.•Analytical upscaling formulas in stratified domain for nonlinear case are obtained.•Coarse scale parameters from the steady state case can be used in transient problem.•It was proved that upscaled time dependent PI converges to time independent one.
