•Life cycle GHG of combustion and gasification bioenergy systems is analyzed.•Eight bioenergy systems were compared against current situation in two remote communities.•Biomass boiler/steam turbine systems generated largest non-biogenic carbon emission reductions.•Disposal of unused biomass (burning or landfilling) affected selection of best environmental system.
