•Wind energy resources at different heights for Urumqi and Xining are analyzed.•The appropriate choices of wind turbines for the two regions are studied.•Small-scale wind turbines or wind-hybrid power systems might be a reasonable option in Urumqi.•Medium-scale wind turbines might be a reasonable option in Xining.
