•We investigate gravity currents of power-law fluids in heterogeneous porous media.•Permeability and porosity vary parallel or transverse to the flow.•Similarity solutions are derived for constant and time-variable influx.•Hele-Shaw analogy for power-law fluid is extended to spatially variable properties.•Theoretical results are validated against two sets of experiments.
