•Weather dependent crop planting date methods are evaluated for winter wheat and maize.•Effect of climate change on crop planting date and yield are evaluated.•Predicted yield loss in the future might be mitigated with earlier planting in case of maize.•Winter wheat yield shows no decrease in the future and later planting is not advised.
