The Upper Carboniferous Taiyuan Formation is a characteristic coal-bearing seam interbedded with terrigenous siliciclastic and carbonate rock in the Shenmu gasfield of northeastern Ordos Basin, central China. To offer guidance for exploitation of Taiyuan Formation in this gas field as well as the Ordos Basin, the strata assemblages, sedimentary characteristics, environment evolution, sandbody width and sedimentary facies control on reservoirs of Taiyuan Formation were investigated based on analysis of well-logging, mud-logging, routine thin-section, cast thin-section, routine petrophysical property and grain size and core description. The reservoirs occur mostly in the medium-and coarse-grained sandstones deposited in high-energetic deltaic plain distributary channels in the SMTF.
