Application of the Concept of Biological Species in Fossil Species Identification
详细信息
摘要

Understanding the species concept is the core issue of biology. However, it has long been chal- lenging {or palaeontologists to use this concept, resulting in numerous disputes and discrepancies in fossil species identification. During recent years, the concept of biological species has become more and more widely accepted and used. Importances of the population thingking and intraspecific varia- tions have been emphasized by more and more palaeontologists. However, many arguments and problems exist in the specific application due to the incomplete preservation of various fossils. This article discusses the advantages, disadvantages and necessity in applying the biological species concept in palaeontological research. Taking the Late Per- mian conodont Clarkina and the brachiopod Pre- lissorhynchia as examples, we consider that fossil species identified based on growth series within populations and a full consideration of intraspecific variations are plausible and have more stratigraphic application value, and morphospecies identified only based on morphological differences belonging to intraspecific variations should be avoided when possible.
