Preliminary Taphonomic Analyses of the Early Cambrian Niutitang Biota near Songlin, Zunyi, Guizhou Province

详细信息
摘要

Through systematic excavation of the Niutitang Biota at the Heishapo section, near Songlin, Zunyi, three fossil-rich layers have been recognized. In the ascending order, there are Perspicaris layer, sponge layer and trilobites, and a Sphenothallus layer similar to the Chengjiang Biota. Based on the taphonomic analyses of more than 1 000 specimens, it is demonstrated that fossils of the Niutitang biota are predominantly preserved as articulated skeletons or carapaces without sorting, but lacking preservation of soft-tissues and structure. No bioturbation and endobenthos have been founded in the biota. Together with information of lithology, geochemistry and sedimentary structures, the authors considered that the Niutitang biota is an in-situ buried community under a quiet, poor oxygen bottom water condition with slow deposition.
