•Reconstructing the evolution and infill of the Early Quaternary North Sea.•New informal seismic stratigraphy for the Early Quaternary North Sea (2.75–0.8 Ma).•Early Quaternary sediment volume is about 40 000 km3.•Glacigenic debris flows and ice-rafting were from an ice sheet over Scandinavia.•A fluvial/glacifluvial sediment contribution was from major European rivers.
