•Methods are described for efficiently eliciting human values in conservation planning.•A novel aggregation method quantifies both value importance and stakeholder certainty.•The aggregation method also describes the level of agreement amongst stakeholders.•Results using a ranking method were broadly consistent with the aggregation approach.•The aggregation method provides a much richer set of information than ranking.
