•Private and external costs of AIF and LFE are analyzed via life cycle costing.•LFE has a lower life cycle cost if only private cost is considered.•Yet, AIF has a lower life cycle cost if private and external costs are included.•A modified eco-efficiency indicator is developed to integrate LCHH and LCC results.•AIF is more eco-efficient as compared to LFE.
