Momentum balance in the shallow water equations on bottom discontinuities

Riemann Invariants analysis of shallow water system with bottom step is discussed. Specific discharge and total head are conserved across the contact wave on the step. Integral momentum balance gives the proper estimate of the depth on the step. The found depth exactly preserves energy and momentum closures in steady flows. Errors on such depth can lead to unphysical increasing of energy across the wave.
