•A method is introduced for analyzing temperature-phenophase development data.•Trends of the analyzed phenophase correspond closely to that of the temperature.•Warming contributed to the overall phenophase and temperature variability.•Warming also reduced the natural variability of the phenophase and temperature.•Warming can affect the timing and natural variability of a phenophase concurrently.
