•We model the capacity of small-scale irrigation farming to adapt to climate change.•We simulate recent projections of the impact of climate change on Asian monsoon.•The most sensitive scenarios are rainfall intensification and a late monsoon onset.•Consequences are high inequality and reduction of cooperation among farmers.•Our results can help farmers in the adaptation process for food and water security.
