•We performed an evaluation of water footprint under different water and N management.•The watershed was analyzed formulating the water footprint reduction with vinasse use.•The average green, blue and grey WF were 145, 38 and 18 m3 Mg−1, respectively.•Vinasse use would relieve the pressure in 10% on total water withdrawal (0.09 m3 s−1).
