•We test a simplified method for modeling catchment-scale actual evapotranspiration.•Actual evapotranspiration is modeled via a physically based threshold pressure head.•The model matches measured ET in a water-limited, shallow-rooted Australian pasture.•Decreasing the threshold increases ET and reduces runoff and groundwater recharge.•The proposed method presents analogies with the Feddes model of root water-uptake.
